I bought a Precision Tig 225 from Lincoln Electric in May 2010. It’s worked quite well and replaced my old Square Wave 275 which they said would cost $1000 to repair with only a 1-year guarantee. So it seemed to make sense to spend $2000 and get a 3-year guarantee. Right?
Broken TIG Welder Foot Pedal
Well, the TIG welder foot pedal just died, after maybe 200 hours of welding. When I turned on the welder, the torch was always on and the gas always running. When I unscrewed the TIG welder foot pedal connector, the gas and torch shut off. I happened to have a hand amptrol and that worked fine. So I knew it was a TIG welder foot pedal problem and not a welder problem. I’m not that happy with the K963-3 hand amptrol but it does the job and I was able to keep working. Replacing the velcro with thin strips of Gorilla tape helped keep it from sliding around and raising the amps 10% helped my not being able to activate it fully with a full finger motion.
I called LE Tech Support and said can you send me a new TIG welder foot pedal? The tech guy said TIG welder foot pedals are only covered for 1 year, but they might cover mine if the cord wasn’t damaged – but I would have to go through my authorized service center. So I call my guy Phil at my local Praxair distributor and ask him to get an RGA for me. He said sure, will do, and I’ll call you Monday. That was 4 Mondays ago.
Replaced the Switch in the TIG Welder Foot Pedal
Well, I was skeptical of the process anyway, so I didn’t wait on Phil. Even if the RGA worked and they sent me a new one, it would take a month, and I needed the TIG welder foot pedal right away. A new K870 Amptrol from LE costs $323! HTP sells the same pedal on Ebay for $169.85. I took the TIG welder foot pedal apart. It’s fairly easy – press in the silver buttons on the side with an awl, carefully remove the top, watch out for the high tension spring – be sure to catch the silver buttons before they shoot across the room. There is a switch on top and in the middle that is activated when the foot pedal is depressed, then a rheostat that rotates to control the amps. Usually it’s the switches on things that go bad. Off and on, off and on, they can only take so much.
I get the code off the switch, V-15G5-1C25-K, and enter it in Google. Mouser Electronics sells these for $2.34 each! But shipping is $8.50. Oh well, that’s pretty cheap. I ordered 5 – wish I had ordered 10. I will probably need at least one every year. Used the credit card and they were here in two days.
The switch is easy to replace. Unscrew the old switch, remove the wires with your needle nose pliers, attach the wires in the same place on the new switch (white in bottom tab, black in second tab from top), then secure the switch back in place.
The TIG welder foot pedal on my Square Wave 275 was also not working. I replaced the switch in that one too. Maybe it will work now. I’ll test it soon and let you know.
There you have it. Easy to do. Hope this was useful for you.
