Sculpture Resources

Tin Man Tech is a treasure trove of superb metal-working tips, equipment and supplies. He may be the preeminent metalworker in this country, especially with regard to antique cars and airplanes.

Ron Young is the man to know when it comes to extensive patina information, techniques and supplies. I've ordered a lot of patina solutions from him.

Lincoln Electric makes two of the welders I own. I've also been to both their 1-week TIG and MIG classes in Cleveland Ohio - excellent instruction, excellent equipment.

Sculptor.org is a useful resource for sculptors

The Compleat Sculptor has many useful supplies.

Roper Whitney makes some of the equipment I use, including my slip roller and Magnabender.

Bonny Doon Engineering is an excellent source for jewelry (metal) fabricating equipment and ideas.

G. Phil Poirier has pioneered a number of intriguing metal working techniques.

Rio Grande has the most extensive supply of jewelry making equipment and supplies.

Sculpture Shop is a source for stone sculptures worth reviewing

Galleries

My wife runs the Jill Underhill Gallery and shows a lot of my work. Here's a map of our area. Here's a great article about Jill's gallery and me   And here's another one.

Chicago Art Source handles a lot of my work for Chicago. Say hello to Allison Mueller.

My fascinating and accomplished family

Sarah Wisseman, my cousin, has a Ph.D  in Archaeology and writes mystery novels set in an archaeological context. Her latest book is The Dead Sea Codex - if you like mysteries, you'll love this book. Her second book is titled, Bound For Eternity and is based upon her first book (non-fiction), The Virtual Mummy.

Charlie Wisseman is Sarah's husband, a just-retired M.D., who has been making incredible art boxes for 40 years. Someone really needs to do a book about his work. Charlie's boxes are very unique, original and one-of-a-kind.

Nicholas Underhill is also my cousin, an accomplished musician and pianist, with several CDs to his credit.

Mary Kay Fink is the wife of Nicholas Underhill and plays first piccolo and second flute with the world-renowned Cleveland Orchestra.

Paco Underhill is my cousin who owns and runs the multi-national business consulting company Envirosell, Inc. He's been featured on 48 Hours with Dan Rather, numerous times on NPR, The New Yorker, etc. and has written two best-selling  books which you can buy on Amazon - Why We Buy and The Call of the Mall.

Uncle Francis was in the United States Diplomatic Corp for 30+ years, including high level postings to Spain, Portugal, Poland, and numerous other locations.  He served as the United States Ambassador to Malaysia, the Phillippines and South Korea.

Uncle Tom,  the great raconteur, lawyer, carpe diemist and mystery book lover, just had his own mystery novel published , The Cambridge Caper.

(I lived with Tom, Tom's wife Carly, Nick, Sally and Paco during a very happy time in Weston, Massachusetts in the the '60s.)

Scott Searles, Jr. is my dad, a retired professor and research chemist and now very busy with the Quakers.

Betsey Means, my cousin in-law (her mother married my uncle), is an accomplished voice-actress, a prolific writer  and a Chicago-based actress who has created three one-act plays celebrating the lives of Mother Jones, Mary Kingsley and Gertrude Bell.

Photography

BubbleArt - a new world of magic and visual delight

Jill Underhill is my wife and creates enchanting and  beautiful photography of flowers.

Howard Schatz  is one of my favorite photographers. He's done a lot of breath-taking photographs of nude dancers underwater. Yes, that's a fantasy of mine.

Jerry Uelsmann has been creating fantastic poetry-based photographs, long before the development of Adobe Photoshop. They continue to amaze me and touch my heart.

Other John Searles

johnsearlesbooks.com - he's the one who lives in NYC and writes the books. They have had good reviews in The New Yorker.
