I am keeping a running list of all the public art opportunities that I am interested in applying for this year. I just copy and paste the opportunities into Wordpad from the available on-line lists. Please see a portion of the April-May deadline list below.
I have applied for about a dozen public art opportunities this year, some just for the practice. The more applications you do, the better you will get. Maybe I will get 1-2% of what I apply for.
Note: unlike Art Shows, many of these Public Art Opportunities do not require a fee with your application.
Most of these opportunities are in the $30K to $230K range! There is some big money out there for public art. And it’s not just Sculpture – Wall Art, Sculpture Wall Art, Big Murals, Mosaics, and many more categories.
My friend Tom Mann says, “the fix is in” meaning that you have to cozy up to the person in charge of the money to get the grant. Is that true? I hope to find out. Let me know what you think.
Best Lists for Public Art Opportunities
Las Vegas Arts Commission – deadline-based list plus many on-going opportunities & residences
Pittsburgh Arts Council – excellent list, some unique
City of Palm Desert – good list
CAFE – excellent list and the only way to apply for many opportunities. You will note that many are geographically limited. It helps to live in Colorado, California, Oregon or Washington.
California Artist Council – many based in California
Chicago Artist’s Resource – big, big list but you have to dig to find the Public Art & Sculpture, some unique to this list only
Phoenix Artists National Opportunities List
Sculptor.org – this list isn’t kept up, but it can be fruitful
National Assembly of States Art Agencies – can you believe it, Michigan doesn’t have a program. Other resources at NASAA also.
AOM – only $30/year – a big monthly list

Design Competition: New Water Feature at Seger Park Playground
Friends of Seger Park Playground is interested in enhancing the park’s Lombard Street landscape with a new water feature to help young children cool down during the summer. From the competition brief:
Interaction with the water feature will be primarily for children from 2 years to 12 years of age, with younger children accompanied by adults. The water feature should be elegant in design yet offer a myriad of spray types (rain to mist), locations, timing and/or other related effects. Surprise is an essential component, yet a predictable facet is desired for younger children.
Uniqueness is essential for a successful entry. FOSPP wishes to have a sculptural focus that is different from all other parks. Abstract or literal, the water feature must be unique. Despite the fact that the site is located in Philadelphia, please do not include historical references.
There is a prize of $20,000 for the winning design. The deadline for submissions is May 1st, 2011.
FOSPP has stressed the importance of having designs vetted by a water feature company, and has provided a directory of several such companies for designers who require it.
The new water feature is just one facet of a broader renovation taking place across the Western side of Seger Park. For much more information about the competition, including park blueprints, site photos, online registration and more, try to find it through Google. The old link is no longer working.
