Acrylic Paintings Abstract Photos

March 31, 2007 - Saturday

Got up late. Still grouchy. Worked on the website and the blog most of the day. Made a lot of progress. Forgot to feed the cats their wet food breakfast.

Worked on painting with waterbased acrylics on 2 mil stainless steel

Notes:

  1. water based acrylics adhere well, cut well, dry well
  2. Ron Young's solvent dyes in Incralac don't adhere well to stainless steel
  3. I am using the 2 mil 304 SS from Enco - it comes in a 24" x 50' roll
  4. I put the paints on mylar, then put the SS on the paint-covered mylar, then flipped it, smushed it around a bit, peeled off the mylar and set it aside to dry.
  5. Best to set it on silicone paper when drying, so it won't stick to the wood or foam
  6. there appear to be some fish-eye effects on the ss - however, this lets you see the metal, so that's okay
  7. I also sprayed krylon on one sheet to see if I could minimize the fish eye effect
  8. also tried a blend of water-based acrylics with solvent dyes in Incralac - this comes out looking very unique and cool
  9. I think I need to go back to a more controlled flow paint technique - attach the SS to glass with rubber cement - make a wall around the periphery with acrylic or wax perhaps. Then flow out the paints
  10. End result will be to cut these up, emboss them in the hydraulic press, then mount and frame them
  11. be sure to wear gloves when working with the paints. Otherwise, the hands stay multi-colored for days.

Got a walk in about 7:30 - its still light then here. No jacket needed. Worked up a sweat and got some air in my lungs and the blood working. About 15 cars at Cafe Gulistan. Everything else seems pretty quiet.
