Steps to Make a Dancing Shapes Design

  1. Cut copper – four 24 x 24
  2. Mark lines for brass spirals x 2
  3. Melt on brass spirals
  4. Patinate – salt/fire, then rinse & dry
  5. Soak off white flux, then re-rinse & dry
  6. Scratch clean backs – wash & dry
  7. Prime backs x 4 – dry 2-3 days
  8. Prep marine plywood – cut & varnish
  9. Prep dowel for risers – black primer
  10. Glue copper to marine plywood – one sides
  11. Trim off excess wood
  12. Glue on copper backs
  13. Clean glue off front as needed
  14. Spray on varnish
  15. Wax front & back
  16. Mark lines for cutting
  17. Cut squares & circles
  18. Sand squares & circles
  19. Repair gluing as needed & fill holes
  20. Re-sand as needed
  21. First edge coat – black primer
  22. Second edge coat – eggshell black
  23. Clean back with 3M pad on grinder
  24. Debur front edges
  25. Layout mylar & mark dimensions
  26. Mark all pieces – workout actual design
  27. Cut risers from dowel
  28. Sand rough edges from risers
  29. Eggshell black on risers
  30. Test design layout with risers – cut more as needed
  31. Trace design onto front with red marker
  32. Flip mylar
  33. Exact trace all pieces onto mylar – upside down – use fine point marker – mark all ‘ups’ – mark register
  34. line for circles
  35. Exact trace all pieces onto other overlapping pieces – use ruler, etc.
  36. Do upside down layout with risers – mark all B’s, all U’s, all +’s
  37. Attach all +3’s, +5’s and +7’s with ¼” dowel and glue
  38. Drill ¼” holes in centers of all +1’s
  39. Drill 1/16” holes in all U’s – do a complete layout and peg with 1/16” brass tig rod
  40. If good, drill all holes 7/64”, counter sink tops, use 1-5/8” screws to assemble, peg all singles
  41. Using wax, clean off all black marks on back and front
  42. Remove tape
  43. Touch up edge blacking as needed
